Get ready for
your web site!
The most common complaint web designers have is clients
being unprepared and untimely. Most projects are on tight
deadlines and you should realize that your role in your web
site may be nearly as time consuming as that of your
designer. However, the more active your role, the more
successful your site will be. Here are 5 tips to consider
when working with a web designer:
1. Know what you want. Be as specific as
possible when asking to have a web site created. Find
examples of other web sites you like, create rough drawings
and even flowcharts. Doing so will help your designer fully
understand the scope and requirements of your project. If
you don't know exactly what you want, you can typically
express your goals and your web designer should provide you
with options that work within your budget and business
needs.
If you DON'T know what you want, we strongly suggest

you absolutely achieve your goals. If you find

2. Content. In order for a designer to get
started on your web site, they will typically need your
content. Your photos, your logos, your text and any other
insightful pieces of information are very helpful when
creating a design. Be sure you have rights to use the photos
you send. Typically, web designers have access to thousands
of high quality photos they can use on your site as well.
It's also important to ensure you provide FINALIZED text to
your designers as they may end up charging you more if you
change it substantially throughout the project. Larger web
design firms often provide copywriting services so be sure
to inquire about this if you need help creating powerful,
web-ready content.
3. Budget. Most web design companies have
a set base price for a simple, informational web site.
Asking for this base price is always an important initial
question so you can gauge your budget against their fees.
Work with your web designer to see what necessary
enhancements you can employ on your web site.
4. References. Always look at your web
designer's portfolio extensively before starting on your
project to get a feel for the type of work they have done.
Additionally, most web designers have strong references they
can provide you upon request. Some designers will even
provide you with a basic mockup design to entice your
business - a great way to see how their creative design
skills will match up with your needs.
5. Playing an active role. Once your web site
is complete, work with your designer to facilitate keeping
it up to date with fresh, relevant information. Doing so
will make your site more attractive to visitors and search
engines. Be sure to ask about solutions like content
management, blogging, video, and RSS feeds. No one wants to visit a stale web
site - keep them coming back for more!
